Position Overview
The Lead Ophthalmic Technician plays a key role in supporting physicians and clinic operations by providing high-quality patient care, performing diagnostic testing, and ensuring efficient patient flow. This position also serves as a clinical leader, assisting with training, coordination, and maintaining standards across the team.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical & Patient Care
- Perform patient intake, including medical and ocular history documentation in EMR
- Measure visual acuity, intraocular pressure, pupil response, and other diagnostic tests
- Administer eye drops and assist during exams and minor procedures
- Prepare and perform imaging and diagnostic testing (OCT, fundus photography, visual fields)
- Educate patients on treatments, medications, and physician instructions
- Serve as a chaperone when required
- Setting up injections and assisting with lasers
Scribing & Documentation
- Accurately document physician findings, exam notes, and treatment plans
- Review and update patient charts to ensure accuracy and completeness
- Assist with ICD-10 and CPT coding and billing documentation
Operations & Team Support
- Coordinate patient flow with providers and front office staff
- Support prior authorizations and communicate with administrative teams
- Assist with inventory management of supplies, equipment, and medications
- Maintain a clean, safe, and compliant work environment
- Participate in training and ensure adherence to clinic policies and procedures
- Provide cross-coverage for front and back office duties as needed
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s degree or higher preferred
- Prior experience as an ophthalmic technician or medical scribe
- COA or COT certification preferred but not required
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology
- Excellent communication, organization, and multitasking skills
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced clinical setting
Schedule & Work Environment
- 8-hour shifts with overtime and occasional weekends as needed
- Active role requiring standing, walking, bending, and lifting (up to 50 lbs)
- Frequent use of medical and office equipment
- Must be able to wear appropriate PPE when required
