Position Overview

The Lead Ophthalmic Technician plays a key role in supporting physicians and clinic operations by providing high-quality patient care, performing diagnostic testing, and ensuring efficient patient flow. This position also serves as a clinical leader, assisting with training, coordination, and maintaining standards across the team.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical & Patient Care

  • Perform patient intake, including medical and ocular history documentation in EMR
  • Measure visual acuity, intraocular pressure, pupil response, and other diagnostic tests
  • Administer eye drops and assist during exams and minor procedures
  • Prepare and perform imaging and diagnostic testing (OCT, fundus photography, visual fields)
  • Educate patients on treatments, medications, and physician instructions
  • Serve as a chaperone when required
  • Setting up injections and assisting with lasers 

Scribing & Documentation

  • Accurately document physician findings, exam notes, and treatment plans
  • Review and update patient charts to ensure accuracy and completeness
  • Assist with ICD-10 and CPT coding and billing documentation

Operations & Team Support

  • Coordinate patient flow with providers and front office staff
  • Support prior authorizations and communicate with administrative teams
  • Assist with inventory management of supplies, equipment, and medications
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and compliant work environment
  • Participate in training and ensure adherence to clinic policies and procedures
  • Provide cross-coverage for front and back office duties as needed

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s degree or higher preferred
  • Prior experience as an ophthalmic technician or medical scribe 
  • COA or COT certification preferred but not required
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology
  • Excellent communication, organization, and multitasking skills
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced clinical setting

Schedule & Work Environment

  • 8-hour shifts with overtime and occasional weekends as needed
  • Active role requiring standing, walking, bending, and lifting (up to 50 lbs)
  • Frequent use of medical and office equipment
  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE when required
